Reading has inspired our year 4 children to raise awareness of plastic pollution by writing to companies across the UK.

The class at Park Road Community Primary School has been busy this term working on a letter-writing campaign to address the issue and bring awareness of the growing problem.

The children were inspired after reading the book Alba the 100-year-old Fish in class as part of their English curriculum.  The book tells the story of Alba the fish who has  spent her entire life collecting precious objects that drift down to the ocean floor such as coral and shells. But over the years, Alba notices her collection is losing its sparkle and that the world is changing as she finds plastic and metal and the coral reef fades.

Through their letters, the students expressed their concerns and urged companies to adopt sustainable practices to reduce their plastic consumption.

Teacher Gill Elstob said: "The children really got involved with this project and were inspired by the story to put across all the reason why plastic pollution is such a problem. We hope we get a response from one of the 31 companies we will be writing to and tweeting.”

Well done class!
