Creative designs, strong imaginations and a special yoga session, helped our youngest children at Park Road Community Primary School launch an exciting new initiative.

The special space themed day for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, was held to launch the school’s new High Performance Learning (HPL) which uses a range of different values to help us all achieve exciting new things using the ‘everybody can’ approach.

During the day children learnt all about what HPL means for our school, starting with thinking about how we can be the best learners we can be and used this to drive the activities for the day.

In Reception, children had the chance to design and create their very own moon buggies in the construction area. They thought about what they would need for a journey to space and what they would pack if they went on this adventure. Children used the key values of cooperation, creativity and perseverance when designing.

Year 1 completed a spaced themed yoga session before designing and making a rocket using recycled materials in teams of two. This gave children opportunities to see alternative perspectives and show flexible thinking when they had to compromise with a friend to develop a shared idea.

Children used creativity and originality by designing the planet they would want to discover. They used marbling techniques to create planets in Art, writing a description of the planet and what they would find there.

Year 2,  worked hard making collages and space themed pictures. Children used Brusho, marbling and paint before carefully layering these up to create their own galaxies.

During the launch, children also used their imagination to create their own space themed poetry. They used expanded noun phrases to describe what they might see when looking up into the sky.

Deputy Head Sophie Akinyemi said: “We can’t wait to start exploring perseverance even further this half term and learning more about what HPL means for our school.”
