Hands-on learning for World Environment Day

Pupils at Park Road Community Primary School marked World Environment Day by bringing global habitats and important sustainability messages into the classroom.
Throughout the day, children learned about a range of environments from around the world, including the icy Arctic which is home to polar bears, as well as hot deserts and the vast oceans. Teachers introduced these diverse ecosystems to help pupils understand the different conditions animals live in and the challenges they face.
Pupils were encouraged to bring these environments to life through imaginative play, creating their own versions of habitats using classroom materials.
As part of the activities, children also designed colourful posters promoting ways to take care of the environment. Their artwork highlighted key messages such as reducing waste, protecting wildlife, and keeping natural spaces clean, showing a strong understanding of the role everyone can play in protecting the Earth.
Pupils took part in sorting exercises, matching animals to their correct habitats. This hands-on activity helped reinforce their knowledge of where different species belong and why those environments are important for survival.
World Environment Day is an annual awareness day organised by the United Nations, aimed at highlighting the climate crisis and encouraging both individual and collective action to protect the planet. It also celebrates progress towards global sustainability. The event is hosted by a different country each year, with the Republic of Korea hosting in 2026, and this year’s theme focuses on ending plastic pollution globally.
