Park Road Community Primary School became immersed in all things science during a special event for all year groups!

As part of Science Day pupils were lucky to have a visitor from Liverpool John Moores University – Menna – who came to inspire them with her work in chemistry.

Park Road’s Science Lead Kathryn Mills talked more about what the day involved and why the day was an important part of learning.

“The children were invited to share what science means to them, thinking about science within the wider world. Menna then explored a variety of careers people who are involved within science may have such as doctors, pharmacists, teachers, beauticians, hairdressers and more!

They were then engaged within practical science discovery, we learnt that fire needs oxygen, heat and fuel to burn, we looked at what might happen if we removed any of these elements, linking in current affairs with how wild fires spread.

Some children then demonstrated custard bombs!

“Menna taught us that everyone can be a scientist, and how science is around us every day, from gravity to dissolving sugar in a cup of tea.

“Each year group continued their learning through a focus investigation linked to the UN goals of sustainable development, for example, Year 6 looked at the UN goal of clean water. They discovered that we can use a red cabbage indicator to investigate the PH levels of water. Year 3 classified rocks and used chocolate to investigate how rocks are made whilst Reception investigated making slime!

There was a ‘science buzz’ around school.”
