Going on a Bear Hunt at Forest School

Pupils enjoyed a memorable series of Forest School sessions inspired by We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Michael Rosen’s much‑loved children’s story.
Using the book as inspiration, the activities encouraged exploration, creativity and outdoor learning, offering the Park Road Community Primary School children an engaging way to connect with nature.
Throughout the sessions, pupils took part in a variety of hands‑on experiences linked directly to the narrative. Children retold the story using their own storyboards, developing their sequencing and recall skills while reflecting on the key moments of Rosen’s text. Water‑themed play also featured as part of the activities, giving pupils the opportunity to investigate natural materials and experiment with movement, flow and texture.
One of the highlights of the project was the creation of homemade telescopes. These simple but imaginative resources supported the children’s role‑play as they set off on their very own bear hunt within the school’s forest area. As they wandered through the woods, pupils embraced the spirit of the story—squelching through mud, splashing in puddles and fully engaging with all the messy fun that outdoor learning provides.
The adventure-filled experience ended with the children decorated their own bear-shaped biscuits. They then enjoyed the finished treats while watching the film adaptation of the book, bringing their learning journey to a satisfying close.
The activity proved to be a wonderful opportunity for pupils to learn, explore and build confidence in the natural environment, celebrating the joy of storytelling through rich, hands‑on experiences.
